Rajanpur was founded around 1770 by Makhdoom Sheikh Rajan Shah and was historically a part of Dera Ghazi Khan District until it became an independent district in 1982. The area was controlled by various rulers, including Baloch tribes and Maharaja Ranjit Singh, before coming under British rule in 1849. The district's administrative importance grew after flooding in 1862 at the previous headquarters, Mithankot, led to the transfer of government offices to Rajanpur.
